Hexcel Exhibiting at CAMX 2018

STAMFORD, Conn. – Hexcel will be exhibiting at the CAMX conference on October 16-18 in Dallas, TX (Booth Y13) to promote its latest technologies and innovations in composites.

One of Hexcel’s newest technologies, HexAM™ additive manufacturing, combines high performance PEKK thermoplastics with carbon fiber to produce flight-ready 3D printed HexPEKK™ parts. Hexcel acquired this technology from Oxford Performance Materials in December 2017. HexPEKK™ structures offer significant weight, cost and time-to-market reductions, replacing traditional cast or machined metallic parts in highly demanding aerospace, satellite and defense applications.

Hexcel will also present its HexShield™ thermal management system that provides high temperature resistance in aircraft engine nacelles. By inserting a thermally resistant material into honeycomb cells, Hexcel provides a core product with unique heat-shielding capabilities that allows for the potential re-use of material after a fire event.

Hexcel will also promote its Acousti-Cap® broadband noise-reducing honeycomb that significantly improves acoustic absorption in aircraft engine nacelles. The acoustic treatment may be positioned at a consistent depth and resistance within the core, or it can be placed in a pattern of varying depths and/or resistances (Multi-Degrees of Freedom and 3 Degrees Of Freedom), offering an acoustic liner that is precisely tuned to the engine operating conditions. These technologies have been tested at NASA on a full engine test rig and meet all 16 design conditions without tradeoffs.

At the show, Hexcel will be launching its newest high modulus fiber, HexTow® HM50, which boasts high modulus and high tensile strength, which make it ideal for commercial and defense aircraft and engines.

The composites industry continues to examine new thermoplastic formulations to speed up production times while decreasing weight and lowering costs. Hexcel’s unsized HexTow® carbon fibers provide excellent bonding interfacial properties with thermoplastic matrices. Not only will visitors see HexTow® carbon fibers being used in Hexcel’s own HexPEKK™ SLS additive manufactured parts, but also in a bike frame produced by Arevo which was made using the FDM 3D printing process.

Hexcel will be promoting its latest PrimeTex® woven carbon fabrics that decrease areal weight while providing a smooth, closed weave and uniform cosmetic appearance. PrimeTex® fabrics are more uniform as the filaments in each tow are spread out creating a thinner and more closely woven fabric that provides better mechanicals and less porosity in a composite laminate.

Also on display will be Hexcel’s HiMax™ multiaxial reinforcements, also known as non-crimp fabrics (NCF), that are multiple layers of unidirectional fibers, with each ply placed in a different orientation or axis. These layers are then typically stitchbonded to form a fabric. HiMax™ reinforcements allow manufacturers to process multiple layers of unidirectional fibers in a single fabric. HiMax™ reinforcements are ideal solutions for many structural industrial applications such as automotive, marine, energy and more.

In the CAMX Awards area of the show, visitors will find an I-beam built from Hexcel’s HiTape® and HiMax™ carbon reinforcements and its HexFlow® infusion resin. The I-beam was manufactured in collaboration with TME using their new fully automated processing technology called C-RTM that requires no operator intervention. This structural part demonstrates a state-of-the art automated manufacturing solution for manufacturing next generation aircraft parts using high quality aerospace materials.
